About Multiple Choice Questions

Multiple Choice questions allow respondents to select one or more answers from a defined list of response alternatives. They are an essential part of surveys, quizzes, polls, and more.

Add Multiple Choice Questions

To add a Multiple Choice question, all you have to do is:

  1. Go to your survey, click the add survey element icon (add button.svg), and choose question.
  2. The Multiple Choice question is the default option, so click next.
  3. Type in your question and change the typography (bold, italic, and underline).

    Use the merge field dropdown menu to insert your respondents' background information or their answers to previous questions.

    The length of question text is limited to max. 250 characters.

  4. Type in your response options. You can copy, move, sort, and delete them using the actions menu.

    Press the ↵ enter key to add a new response option, instead of clicking the add response options button.

    If you have the response options in an external document such as Word or PDF, you can copy/paste the response options and add them in bulk.

  5. When you are satisfied with your question, click next.
  6. Now you can set up the question settings.
    • Text entry for final option: Enable this setting to allow your respondents to elaborate their answers. This setting is only possible for the last response option. This could, for example, be useful if your last response option is “Other. Please elaborate.”
    • Require answer: This setting is enabled by default. Disable it if you don’t want your question to be mandatory.
    • Multiple selection: Enable this setting to allow your respondents to select multiple answers. If you enable the setting, you will be able to select a constraint (all, range, or exact) of response options respondents are allowed to fill out.
    • Layout (radio buttons): Select the question's layout and decide how your response options are visually presented to your respondents. Radio buttons are the default layout but you can change it to a drop-down menu. Please note that it is not possible to change the layout if you have enabled the multiple selection setting.
    • Randomize response options: Enable this setting to ensure the order of response options is not the same for all respondents.

  7. When you have finalized your question and customized the settings, click add.

Multiple Choice questions can have one response option.

Exclusive Response Option

When you allow respondents to make multiple selections in Multiple Choice questions, you might want to provide a choice like “None of the above,” which doesn’t make sense to pair with other options. The Exclusive Response Option setting ensures that a response option can only be chosen by itself.

  1. Go to your survey, and click the relevant question.
  2. Click on the response option you want to make exclusive.
  3. Enable the exclusive response option setting.

Exclude Response Options from Randomization

You can choose which response options you want to randomize and which ones you want to keep in a fixed position. For instance, if you want to add a "None of the above" or "Other" option to your multiple-choice question, you can set those options to remain in a fixed position while randomizing the other ones. This will ensure that the "None of the above" or "Other" option always appears in a consistent position in the list of options.

To exclude response options from being randomized, all you have to do is:

  1. Go to your survey, and click the relevant question.
  2. Click on the response option you want to exclude from randomization.
  3. Disable the randomize setting.

If you have enabled the "Text entry for final option" setting, the last option will be automatically excluded from the randomization.

Multiple Choice Questions in Response Data Downloads

You can download your survey responses from Enalyzer for several purposes. You can use the file for analysis in other software, share it with your team, or import it to another Enalyzer survey.

  • In the response data download, single selection Multiple Choice questions are found in one column. By default, each response option in the question will be displayed with the respective label number, i.e. the label number for the selected response option is displayed in each respondent's row. You are able to edit the format output, you can read about data formats here.



  • In the response data download, multiple selection Multiple Choice questions are split up. Each response option will have its own column in the response data file. By default, the format output is the value, i.e. on each respondent's row, there will be a “1” in the columns of the response options they selected. You are able to edit the format output, you can read about data formats here.



  • If you enabled the setting text entry for final option, the open answers will have their own column. The column name will be the number of the question followed by "_Open"



Multiple Choice Questions in Reports

You can visualize the data collected by your Multiple Choice questions in your reports. The available charts for Multiple Choice questions are:

When a question is formatted with the multiple selection setting, many charts for that question will display a higher number of observations than the total number of respondents since each respondent can select multiple response options.
