How can I use data series?

A data series is a grouping of data, based on one or more filters. You can plot multiple data series in a chart for comparison or benchmarking purposes.

When multiple data series are plotted in a chart, each data series is identified by a unique color.

Benchmark with data series

Benchmarks give you an easy way to compare your results across departments, countries, years, and other variables, giving your results context and letting know where your organization stands.

With the data series function, you create your own benchmarks, giving you full control over the benchmarking process.

For this guide we will use an example. We sent an employee satisfaction survey to our Copenhagen office and now we want to compare the motivation and satisfaction across departments - accounting, marketing, sales, and development.

We invited the respondents via email and added the Department background variable to our survey.

We are now going to create a report, create a data series for each department, and finally use these to create benchmark charts!

Step 1: Create data series

  1. Go to your report, click on  and select configure.
  2. Click on data series*.
  3. Click and your data series will be created immediately.
  4. Click on the data series and select edit.
  5. You now have the following options:
    • Name: Name your data series to help those that view your report to understand the data series purpose.
    • Color: Choose the color of the data series.
    • Ignore all filters: Enable this function if you want the data series to ignore report and chart filters, if any.
    • Data: The filter(s) this data series is based on will be shown here.
  6. Click add filter and select the variable you would like to include in your data series.
  7. Click yes to create a open filter or no to create a close filter.
  8. Define your filter selections and click save.

* This feature is only available in the PRO and PRO+ plans. Check out our plans.

For this example, we'll create 4 data series:

  • Accounting
    • Variable: Department
    • Filter selection: Accounting
  • Marketing
    • Variable: Department
    • Filter selection: Marketing
  • Sales
    • Variable: Department
    • Filter selection: Sales
  • Development
    • Variable: Department
    • Filter selection: Development

Pro tip: You can add open and close filters to your data series, making your charts more specific and dynamic.

Step 2: Benchmark
Now that we have our data series, we are ready to benchmark. We want to benchmark the motivation and satisfaction of our Copenhagen office, so let’s create a chart on the motivation and satisfaction questions.

  1. Go to your report, click  and select frequency chart.
  2. Select the variable, in this case, the motivation and satisfaction section, and click add. Your chart will be created immediately.
  3. Click on your newly created chart's heading and click settings.
  4. Under data, click on data series.
  5. Click on add data series and select your data series. In our case we chose accounting, marketing, sales, and development.
  6. Click add and you have now created a benchmark!
  7. Your changes are saved immediately.
